A recipe for a Horse’s Neck

Monday, March 2nd, 2009
  • 1 part rye whiskey.  Michter’s Rye is nice, Wild Turkey Rye not bad at all.  While bourbon can work, I think it’s too sweet for this drink.
  • 3 parts ginger ale.  Of course those Reed’s Ginger Ale’s are good, but I really like the Knudsen Ginger Ale Spritzer.  It’s all-natural and has no sugar (it’s sweetened with fruit juice.)  As a Michigander, I’d like to be able to recommend Vernors, but it kind of jumped the shark a while back.  Not sure why, but it doesn’t taste as good anymore.  Maybe because they quit using stevia as their sweetener and started using corn syrup.  Plus, I’m really skeptical that now that Vernors is owned by the “Dr. Pepper Snapple Group” that they really still age it in oak barrels.
  • A dash of bitters.

Mix the above, then pour into a chilled glass filled with a few ice cubes, or if it’s a hot summer day, a glass crammed full of crushed ice.  Garnish with a squeeze of lemon that you then can hang on the drink, or put in the drink itself.

Someone I know likes to add a bit of fresh, grated ginger to the mix.

Recipe for Slime
Difficulty: easy
Time required: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon Borax powder
  • 4 oz or ½ cup of Elmer’s white glue and water

Instructions:
1. Pour the glue into bowl.  If you have a big bottle of glue, you want 4 oz or ½ cup of glue.

2. Fill the empty glue bottle with water and stir it into the glue (or add ½ cup of water).

3. If desired, add food coloring. Otherwise, the slime will be an opaque white, which is nice.

4. In a separate bowl, mix one cup (240 ml) of water with 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of borax powder.

5. Slowly stir the glue mixture into the bowl of borax solution.

6. Place the slime that forms into your hand and knead until feels dry. (Don’t worry about the excess water remaining in the bowl.)

7. The more the slime is played with, the firmer and less sticky it will become.

8. Store in a zip-lock bag in the fridge (otherwise it will develop mold).

Tips:

  • Don’t eat the slime, it isn’t particularly toxic, but not good for you either.
  • Slime cleans up pretty easily. remove dried slime after soaking in water.
